Instructor-Led Programs

If you are planning to study abroad on a instructor-led program, you must contact the program leader for details about the application process. In addition to the application materials required by the program leader, students must electronically submit the documents listed below to the Education Abroad Office. Be sure to meet the deadlines for both the program leader's department and the Education Abroad Office.

Applications for Maymester and Summer will open on January 15th!

*Before starting an application, please be sure to get faculty approval. Reach out the program contact listed on the program directory page of your chosen program.  Once you have received their approval, continue to Step 1.*

Step 1: Go to the program directory

  • If this is your first time logging into Via, the application database, you will be prompted to sign in using your USC username and password. You’ll also be directed to a data intake form as well as a program match quiz to help match you with a program.
  • If you already know what program you want to do, locate it in the program directory and click the "apply now” link on the top right of the program page.

Step 2: Complete your application requirements

  • Begin filling in the application information. Note that if some fields are gray and cannot be edited, they will be automatically updated once your data is retrieved from the USC Banner System.
  • Read and acknowledge the following agreements:
    • Student Agreement and General Statement of Responsibility
      Covid-19 Waiver
    • Mandatory Overseas Medical Insurance Confirmation
    • Pay the Education Abroad Application Fee $225 (Undergraduate students only)
  • Submit the application

Step 3: Education Abroad will review your application and mark it as “conditionally approved”. You will receive an email confirming your approval with a list of forms to complete. If you have not received communication in one week after submitting the application, please contact our office at edabroad@sc.edu.

Step 4: Log into your application and complete the required forms.  You will receive an email confirmation for each submitted form.

  • Financial Aid Pre-Screen Form (Spring Break, Winter Break, and Fall Break applicants do not need to fill out the Financial Aid Pre-Screen Form)
  • Passport Upload
  • Medical Information
  • Pre-Departure Information

Step 5: Education Abroad will review your forms. You will receive an email confirmation for each accepted form. Incomplete forms will be sent back to you with directions for completion. When forms have been reviewed and are complete, your application will be moved to “committed” status.

Step 6: Complete the mandatory Safe Check Enrollment. An automatic email will be sent prompting you to complete this step. Additionally, you can keep track of your travel in the Travel Plan section (optional) of your dashboard.

Step 7: After receiving clearance from the Office of Student Conduct, the Education Abroad Office will enroll you in the mandatory overseas insurance coverage. When you are enrolled, you will receive an email from CISI, the insurance provider, with the documentation. Please be sure to check your USC bill for the charge and pay it promptly to avoid being dropped from your registered course.

All emails will come from our application database, Via TRM. Please be on the lookout for emails from messages@Via-trm.com. The application system works best on a laptop or desktop computer and with the Google Chrome browser.
