European Civilization from the mid-17th Century

 This course surveys the histories of European nations from the Old Regime to the end of the Cold War. Using a range of primary and secondary sources, we will examine the key milestones in Europe's social, political, economic, and cultural development. Topics include the decline of the society of Estates, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, Napoleon, European imperialism, liberalism, socialism, Nazism, the world wars, and the rise and fall of the Cold War.

This course is offered asynchronously online. Students are not required to attend in-person classes. They can access the course at any time convenient for them, as long as they meet the assigned deadlines. Regular internet access is required for successful completion of the course.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes

 As an introductory survey this course has the following expected outcomes: 

•  Outcome 1: Identify and summarize the most important facts, developments, and interpretations of events in the history of Europe from the 17th century to the collapse of the communist system, and the end of the Cold war.  
   
  You will demonstrate this achievement through reading quizzes and tests 
   
• Outcome 2: Demonstrate basic skills in the comprehension and analysis of selected  sources and their relevance in the context of historical knowledge. 
   
  You will demonstrate these skills through reading quizzes, tests, and final exam. 
   
• Outcome 3: Interpret European history as a complex process and as a part of the larger world development rather than understanding it solely as a series of isolated dates and events 
   
  This task will be achieved through answering comparative analysis questions offered in quizzes and tests. 
   
• Outcome 4: Extend awareness of other cultures, countries, international issues, and the process of globalization.
   
  This result will be an outcome of the entire course achieved through completion of all the assignments of the course.
