EXPRESS: 2025 Exploratory Research for Extreme-Scale Science DE-FOA-0003545

Sponsor: DOE
Internal Deadline: 01/28/2025
Institutional Submission Limit: 2/topic
Sponsor Deadline: 02/25/2025
Program Website

Extreme-scale science recognizes that disruptive technology changes are occurring across science applications, algorithms, computer architectures and ecosystems. Recent reports point to emerging trends and advances in high-end computing, quantum technologies, and artificial intelligence on increasingly heterogeneous architectures. Significant innovation will be required in the development of effective paradigms and approaches for realizing the full potential of scientific computing from emerging technologies. Proposed research should not focus on a specific science use case, but rather on creating the body of knowledge and understanding that will inform future advances in extreme-scale science. Consequently, the funding from this NOFO is not intended to incrementally extend current research in the area of the proposed project. It is expected that the proposed projects will significantly benefit from the exploration of innovative ideas or from the development of unconventional approaches.

Applications submitted in response to this NOFO must substantially address one of the following research topics. Additional details about each topic are provided in the soliciation.

A) Quantum computation based on topological concepts
B) Local and Campus-Area Quantum Networking for Next Generation Parallel Quantum Computing
C) Neuromorphic Computing
D) Computational Physical Systems
E) Deep Understanding of AI Models

Submission Deadline for Pre-Applications (required): February 25, 2025, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time
Pre-Application Response Date: March 18, 2025, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time
Submission Deadline for Applications: May 6, 2025, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

No more than a total of two pre-applications or applications per research area specified above as the lead institution in a single- or multi-institutional team.

Submission Process

Limited submissions MUST be coordinated with the Office of the Vice President for Research.

If interested in applying for this opportunity, please combine the following items into a single PDF and email to resdev@mailbox.sc.edu by 5pm on the INTERNAL DEADLINE above:

  • Cover page with grant program name & number, research topic area and letter, your project title, PI (name, department/unit, & email), and list of co-PIs/key collaborators (name & department/unit)
  • a two-page project abstract addressing key components/criteria for this specific grant program
  • a 2-3 page CV/biosketch for the PI (SCiENcv preferred)
