Lesley Smith is Director of Basic Courses and Instructor of French. She holds a PhD
in Linguistics from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Arts in Applied
Linguistics from the University of Leicester, UK. She specializes in the acquisition
of French by learners in the United States and teaches classes of all levels about
French language and linguistics.
From a research perspective, she is interested in the role of affective individual
differences, such as anxiety and motivation, in language acquisition. She is also
interested in the implementation of research-driven teaching methods through language
learning technology, as her dissertation focused on psycholinguistic approaches to
language teaching.
