Instructor - Production Coordination and Stage Management
The faculty of the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, invites applications for a full time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor to begin August 16, 2025. The position is a 9-month appointment with a workload equivalent to teaching four courses per semester divided among traditional teaching and production management. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding.
Job responsibilities will include, as workload allows, serving as Production Coordinator for four main-stage theatrical productions each year; teaching courses in stage management or related topics such as production management and producing for the theatre; serving as stage manager for productions and coordinator of students completing experiential, theatre laboratory placements; and supervising/mentoring student stage managers.
Candidates must have an M.A. or M.F.A. in Theatre or comparable professional theatre management experience by the time of the start date of the appointment. In addition to the required education, strong preference will be given to applicants who have proven managerial skills and the ability to promote a collaborative, team-based environment.

Open Rank Professor – Directing
The Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus, isseeking applications for a 9-month, full-time, open-rank, tenure-track faculty position in Directing. The position will commence August 16, 2025.
Candidates for the rank of Assistant Professor must have an MFA or PhD in Theatre by the start date of employment; candidates for Associate or full Professor ranks must also have university-level teaching experience consistent with academic policy and a record of creative achievement in the profession.
We seek a visionary and collaborative colleague with primary expertise in directing to create innovative curriculum, lead a nationally recognized MFA program, and sustain a trajectory of creative achievement / research consistent with the expectations of a flagship research university. The ideal candidate will maintain a strong level of professional engagement in directing for live entertainment at a national and /or international level. A record of excellence in teaching, mentoring students, and experience working with diverse student populations at the graduate and/or undergraduate level is highly desirable along with a demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence and culturally responsive pedagogy.
Candidates must be dedicated to building a diverse and equitable learning environment through their teaching, creative inquiry, and collaboration. Candidates should have expertise in a variety of theatre methodologies and approaches. These might include Stanislavski; Meisner; Michael Chekhov; Lecoq; Theatre of the Oppressed; Bertolt Brecht; Devised Theatre; Peter Brook, or others. It is important that the candidate contribute to our commitment to including styles outside the Western canon, such as Black and Afrocentric Acting Method, Chicano, Latin American, Indigenous, and/or Asian performance practices or other practices/traditions.
The successful candidate will serve as head of the MFA Directing Program. Responsibilities include teaching courses in directing and acting for both undergraduate and graduate students and teaching in other theatre performance areas as qualified. The normal teaching load is 3/3, which includes directing departmental productions. Additional duties include mentoring students, assisting in student recruitment, supervising graduate teaching assistants, and mentoring graduate thesis and undergraduate capstone projects. Service on departmental and university committees is expected, as is contribution to curriculum development to preparestudents for contemporary directing and performance practice. Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop and maintain a creative/scholarly profile that aligns with the expectations of tenure and promotion at a tier-one research university.
