Educational Objectives

In accordance with Paragraph I.A.3. of the American Bar Association’s Criteria for Student Study at a Foreign Institution as amended March 2014, the University of South Carolina School of Law states the following educational objectives in permitting its students to study at foreign institutions for credit toward the J.D. degree:

University of South Carolina School of Law recognizes the importance of exposing students to an increasingly global world with various international legal systems and cultures. The particular educational objectives that the law school seeks to achieve in permitting its J.D. students to study abroad and earn credit toward the J.D. degree are: (1) to expose students to laws and legal systems of jurisdictions outside the United States to better prepare them for the practice of law; (2) to allow students to learn about the law and legal culture of foreign jurisdictions and develop an international perspective where they may have a particular interest; and (3) to allow students to experience a foreign language and culture to benefit their future careers.

Because the U.S. State Department provides travel information for every country in the world, we encourage students to check for any warnings or alerts that might be posted for any country they are interested in visiting.
