    • Ensure that you have designated a preferred method of contact.
    • Consider adding office hours or “Recurring Availability” per your preferences. You may remove other checklist items if not applicable.
    • Strongly encouraged to include course communication specifics either on syllabus or on blackboard course page (i.e. add under syllabus and schedule folder).
    • Instructors are encouraged to consider which resources are required to achieve course outcomes and list any supplemental material in the Suggested Texts/Readings table when applicable.
    • Resources listed here should match what was submitted to the USC Bookstore prior to the start of the semester.
    • If the course does not have required texts and/or readings, select the box checked “None” and leave the section title within the syllabus.
    • Resources required or suggested for individual topics may be specified by the responsible instructor as applicable to their material. This information would be shared on Blackboard and is not required to be placed on the course syllabus.
    • This optional section was removed from the newest syllabus template, but may be added per individual course coordinator preference to include detail beyond that which is found in the official Course Description.
    • General information on course technology is available in Part II of the syllabus. If your course contains unique technology needs, a section may be added to the syllabus.
    • Insert course specific descriptions of all assessments in detail.
    • Grade sanctions or penalties for students arriving late to an exam should be specified in each individual course syllabus as applicable. Grade sanctions or penalties for academic dishonesty should be specified in each individual course syllabus as applicable.

    • Under Course Outcome Assessed by Component, list the course learning outcome or outcomes which will be assessed by the component.
    • Under USC Educational Outcome Assessed by Component, write the USC College of Pharmacy Educational Outcome(s) using corresponding number. For example, "1.1 (for Learner) and 2.1 (for Patient-centered Care)," per Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE) Educational Outcomes.

Each course must include a statement on acceptable use of AI in Part I of the syllabus.

Three sample statements are provided below and may be customized to meet specific course needs. Remember that Syllabi Part II establishes that use of AI to complete submitted assignments is a violation of academic integrity unless specifically permitted by the course coordinator. Part II also includes encouragement to use AI as a study aid. Your Part I statement should specify this course's policy for assignment completion and any additional guidelines.

    • Choose the statement that best aligns with your course learning outcomes and assessment methods
    • Use the selected statement as written, or customize if needed for specific course context
    • If you select Statement 2 or 3, clearly define acceptable AI use in individual assignment descriptions
    Sample Statement 1: "No Use"
(No use of generative AI tools permitted)

All assignments should be fully prepared by the student. Developing strong competencies in the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with this course will prepare you for success in your degree pathway. Therefore, the use of generative AI tools (ChatGPT) to complete any aspect of assignments for this course is not permitted and will be treated as plagiarism. If you have questions about what constitutes a violation of this statement, please contact the course coordinator.

    Sample Statement 2: "Contextual Use"
(Generative AI is permitted in specific contexts and with acknowledgment)

Understanding how and when to use generative AI tools (ChatGPT) is quickly emerging as an important skill for future professions. To that end, you are welcome to use generative AI tools in this class if it aligns with the learning outcomes or goals associated with assignments. Students are not permitted to use AI to generate answers for assignments, exams, projects, or use AI to complete other course related tasks. You are fully responsible for the information you submit based on a generative AI query (such that it does not violate academic honesty standards, intellectual property laws, or standards of non-public research you are conducting through coursework). Your use of generative AI tools must be properly documented and cited for any work submitted in this course. If you have questions about what constitutes a violation of this statement, please contact the course coordinator.

    Sample Statement 3: "Encouraged Use"
(Students are encouraged to use generative AI tools in coursework)

The use of generative AI (ChatGPT) is encouraged for certain tasks within this course.  AI tools can be used to help brainstorm assignments or projects, or to revise existing created work.  When submitting an assignment, it is expected that clear attribution for the text that was generated by the AI tool is provided (e.g., AI-generated text appears in a different colored font, quoted directly in the text, or use an in-text parenthetical citation).

    • Additional rows should be added to match course meeting schedule. Consider inclusion of lecture content to be assessed on each exam written within the course schedule, i.e. "Exam 1 (lecture topics 1-6)" or "Exam 1 (content from dates 1/9-1/28)."
  2. Review Syllabus Template Part II.
This document contains standard COP policies for academic integrity, course attendance, technology, required reading, disability services, mental health and well-being.
  3. Submit your completed Syllabus Part I.

Guidance on elective coursework outside of USC

Students must complete the university’s special enrollment request form before taking any outside coursework if they intend to transfer the course credit back to the university. The course must also be approved by the COP Curriculum Committee in order to count for elective course credit toward the USC Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Please be aware of this should you share information with students regarding outside learning opportunities. Please direct students to speak with Dr. Julie Sease before they enroll in any outside coursework.
