Research and Creative Scholarship

Research isn’t a side pursuit—it’s central to our mission. It keeps our teaching timely, relevant, and grounded in discovery. Much of our work is interdisciplinary, uniting our two schools and connecting us with collaborators across the university. A majority of the CIC research and creative scholarship focus on the following three areas.

Leveraging Emerging Technologies

CIC research focuses on emerging information technologies, emphasizing their human and prosocial dimensions. Faculty study topics such as cognitive biases and ethics in AI, and apply AR and VR to education, training and reducing digital inequities.

Empowering Communities

Another focus of CIC research is empowering communities. Faculty study community information practices, social media use, and media representation, emphasizing fairness, accessibility and engagement to address communities’ essential needs.

Facilitating Informed Decisions

CIC research empowers the public to make informed decisions in areas such as news, health, risk, science, libraries and commerce. This work promotes information integrity and strengthens decision-making across personal and professional contexts.

Areas of Research and Scholarly Engagement

Research is at the heart of what we do. It ensures that our teaching stays relevant, our scholarship remains rigorous, and our impact extends beyond the university. Through research, we advance knowledge and strengthen the role of information and communication in society.
