Iftikhar Ahmad

Assistant Professor Ahmad's research interests include the growth and study of ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors including high aluminum content AlGaN, boron nitride and gallium oxide, fabrication of novel high-power electronic and photonic devices, and computer simulation of these devices.

Assistant Professor Booth’s research is focused on power grid modernization through optimized power electronic converters. Key areas of interest include DC microgrids, electric vehicles, and higher frequency transformers.

Associate Professor Chen's current research interests include Signal integrity for high speed circuits, multi-band mobile handset printed inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) and base station antenna arrays, RF, millimeter-wave, and microwave integrated circuits printed on multi-layer GaN based substrates, Bioelectromagnetic applications, Large target scattering RCS prediction using higher-order, efficient Maxwell’s solvers, Wireless signal coverage study by using the PSTD MRTD approaches.

Professor Ginn's areas of specialization are Power electronics applications in energy systems, power phenomena and compensation in non-sinusoidal systems, and power quality.

Asif Khan

Carolina Distinguished Professor Dr. Khan is Director of the Photonics and Microelectronics Laboratory. His research work is three-fold: Develop ultraviolet and visible high power solid-state light-emitting diodes and lasers using AlInGaN multiple quantum wells; Develop AlInGaN based high-power, high frequency microwave transistors using innovative material designs and processing techniques; and Develop AlInGaN based photodetectors.

Professor Krishna Mandal

Krishna Mandal

Professor Mandal’s research interests include wide bandgap semiconductors based nuclear detectors and front-end readout electronics; machine learning reinforced radiation detection spectrometers for robust, high-performance measurements, and analysis; high-efficiency heterojunction thin-film solar cells (CIGS, CdTe, CZTS, Sb2S3, DSSC etc.); THz sources, sensing, and imaging applications; 2D-materials and nanomaterials.

David Matolak

Professor Matolak’s specializations and research interests include Wireless Channel Characterization, Ad Hoc Communication Networks, Modulation/Detection PHY/MAC, Random Process Modeling, and Electromagnetics Modeling.

Dr. Nasiri's research interests are high power/voltage energy conversion, energy storage, and microgrids. Dr. Nasiri has published numerous technical journal and conference papers on related topics. He also holds seven patents and has co-authored two books.

Assistant Professor Sahin’s research interests include the signal processing methods emphasizing on the physical layer of wireless communication systems, intelligent air-interfaces, waveforms, sequences, machine learning, radio access technologies, broadband mobile networks, and wireless communication standards, e.g., IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi and 3GPP 5G NR.

Guoan Wang

Professor Wang’s research interest include Smart RF passives/systems: MEMS based RF components/systems, on-chip tunable RF components/systems, High performance on-ship components characterization and process optimization: MEMS/NEMS and their RF and Bio-medical applications; Novel materials and their mmwave applications; 3D IC and system integration. He also serves as the Department’s Graduate Director.
